AIDS Africa's Children Calling.

Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre 26th. May 2007

His Excellency Anthony and Mrs. Lillian Mongalo

The Daily Advertiser Wagga Wagga

(Click on the article for a larger version)

The High Commissioner gave a very honest talk about his life in South Africa and then as an exile for many years. He concluded his talk with an up beat description of life in South Africa and he also discussed HIV/AIDS, the World Football Cup 2010 and crime. All in all we came away encouraged by the South African Government's approach to their problems and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Indeed South Africa is the Good Hope for Africa.

Darryl Gardiner a local Wiradjuri man and Kili 28/8 climber presented His Excellency with a didgeridoo that Darryl had made himself. His Excellency promised to learn how to play it and said that he would play it at the World Cup in 2010.

The web site features Stephanie Nolen who wrote 28.

Yu can read about Stephanie here and then order her book 28:

Stephanie Nolen

28

It is a book that you will not be able to put down and gives us many more reasons to create awareness of the situation in Africa regarding AIDS and the orphans of AIDS. 28 more reasons why we are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in August or should that be 28 million reasons?

Butch Liebenberg from Cape Town.

Great News from Hout Bay Cape Town.

Here is a letter from the Past President of Hout Bay Rotary Butch Liebenberg.

Hello Kili Climbers

Good news re an African climber from Imizamo Yethu our informal settlement in Hout Bay(now officialy called a formal settlement)

Her name is Anna Khuzwayo. Anna is 32 years old single with no children. I mention this as most African women in South Africa, married or not, have children. She is a Zulu and speaks Xhosa and English. I found her a delightful lady to talk to and have no doubt you will all be asking her many searching questions. Anna is an AIDS counciller in Imizamo Yethu employed by and overseas NGO, ARK.

Our best wishes to all climbers from Hout Bay Rotary club.

Profiles from the Front Lines of Africa's AIDS War

I have just finished reading this amazing book, 28 stories in one book. It is a MUST read for anyone contemplating doing something to ease the burden of AIDS in Africa.

'28: Stories of AIDS in Africa'

by Stepahnie Nolen

The new book 28: Stories of AIDS in Africa profiles one person whose life has been affected by AIDS for every million people living with the disease on the continent. (i.e. 28 million.)

Tigist Haile Michael and her brother Yohannes were orphaned by AIDS. They live on their own in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This story can be seen here:

Kilimanjaro's Glaciers Collapsing

The Furtwängler Glacier on Mount Kilimanjaro

Photos by Dr. Vincent Keipper who was in the right place at the right time to get this photo of the crumbling Furtwängler Glacier on Mt. Kilimanjaro. The photo is dramatic evidence of the glacier's recession. Room-size blocks of ice tumbled across the trail Keipper had hiked the
day before.

See the web site below for the story courtesy of the National Geographic:

Crumbling Glacier on Kilimanjaro

One of the reasons we should all be concerened by global warming and I hope we will be able to see and may be to touch these amazing glaciers in August.

The Sheet Project

Some images from Brittany Watson's sheet signing to raise funds for Kili 28/8.

The sheet will be presented to the School of St Jude by Mandy Watson when we reach Tanzania, probably at assembly which we are looking forward to being part of.

Some of Brittany's "victims" include
her teacher Mrs Jenny George.

Brittany intends to keep going until
the sheet is full and she is charging
for the prints.

Even Brother Ben has been roped in.

Well done all round and the best part is that a whole lot of students and their teachers now know about the School of St Jude and why we are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in August. Having fun at the same time we are proud of you Brittany.
