Peter Sparks received his Paul Harris Fellow from the District Governor of D9700 in Griffith recently. A most deserved award as Peter and his club, Griffith Avanti Rotary raised nearly $20,000 for Kili 28/8. Congratulations Peter from all your fellow climbers and Rotarians alike.

Below and following are three pictorial reports on our visits to the three beneficiaries of the proceeds of Kili 28/8. If you need more information on how these three projects are being conducted and where your money is going to, please do not hesitate to contact me for a full report.

We can guarantee you all that the money is being well spent and that 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the beneficiaries. We can also guarantee that none of the funds that we raise will be going to administration or kick backs. That is why we are working with Rotary clubs on the ground in Africa who are well trusted and have a great track record of delivery.

We are looking to double the funds raised, through the Rotary Foundation with matching grants.

We will be closing this phase of the fund raising on December the 31st. So we invite you to continue the awareness and hence fund raising for Kili 28/8. We are still $35,000 short of our target of $100,000 Aussie.

We walked many steps as a team up and down Mount Kilimanjaro and each step we took was for a purpose and for Anna Khuzwayo ( a fellow climber) each step was for someone she knows with HIV/AIDS in her township of Imizamo Yethu; for me each step was for an orphan of Africa. I mean to make every step we took as a team count in some way for them in the future.

Gemma Sisia the founder of St Jude's showing us the new class rooms and dormitories for the secondary school due to open in 2008. All power to you Gemma, well done!!! One third of the funds we raised from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro will go to providing 2 new electricity generators for this exiting new development. It goes to show you what one person can achieve.

I thought you might appreciate these pictures of your flag hanging proudly in our library. The flag was pinned over the banister of our library after initially being presented to the school. But it was then decided that it should be hung from the ceiling, both to keep it away from the students who loved to put their hands on the imprints on the flag and to act as a curtain to stop the glare on the libraries computer screens. We had Alfonse, our schools carpenter, hang it up two weeks ago and it has got only positive comments. I believe it was your daughters’ school who made the hanging for us, so please pass on our thanks (and the photos) to her and her classmates.

I’m sorry it has taken me a while to send them out to you, but we have all been very busy here at the school. Testing has started at the school to try and find 180 new students for next year and with 2000 hopeful children showing up every week, it has been quite a challenge.

The Beneficiaries 2. OPERATION MEDICAL HOPE

BENEFICIARY # 2. OPERATION MEDICAL HOPE HOUT BAY SOUTH AFRICA.

Our Rotary centennial twin club, Hout Bay in Cape Town, South Africa are raising funds for their wonderful project Operation Medical Hope. They will be building a "clinic" which will be known as The Coolamon House. From this building they will distribute advice, medicine and assistance to HIV+ mothers to be. The idea is to stop the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child.

Mathare Slums in Nairobi.

600,000 souls exist here.

It is here that HOPE World Wide and RFFA are supporting the orphans of this slum near the centre of Nairobi. Mathare used to be a vegetable garden once.

Some of the older orphans who sung and danced a welcome for us.

The "playground" for the young ones. Here is where our help is needed urgently.

We all left Mathare in a very sombre mood determined to help RFFA and HOPE ww by raising funds for this very worthwhile project in one of the areas in the world that demands our attention and assistance. No human should be allowed to live in such atrocious conditions.

An amazing lady who never gave up. Anna was the soul of this climb and gave it her all. We will never forget her dedication to raising awareness of her people with HIV/AIDS. Anna made it to Stella Point the second highest point in all of Africa.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Barafu Camp with the mess tent in the background. In the front are Kate O'Neill and Narelle Rodway, the afternoon before the attempt on the summit. Narelle made it to Stella Point. Kate, the youngest in the team, had to be rescued during the attempt at night. Kate was given oxygen after she fell unconscious and was immediately carried down to base camp at Mweka by four of our porters.

Kate and her Mother Linda, who went down with her, will be back for another go in two years time. We were all very relieved to see Kate well and fully recovered at Mweka on our return form the summit attempt.

Narelle's determination and spirit earned her the Rotary Kili 28/8 award, Narelle is a Lion!

The highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres above sea level, 19340 feet.

10 of the climbers of 16 made it to Uhuru Point and 4 others officially made it to Stella Point at 5,756 metres or 18,884 feet the second highest point in Africa.

All in all a great success and NOW we need to work even harder for the victims of AIDS in Africa especially the children.

Well todays the day, all downhill from here, its been quite some time now since we saw our friends and loved ones and I must say I am missing ol "Buck" and Johnathon. Hours before John started up the mountain he was talking in earnest about another mountain in Africa that he is planning for next year to raise even more money, this decision we have discussed on the basis of this project being so very successful. It should be only a couple of days until we hear from our up n downers. I for one am looking forward to what mischief ol' Buck got up to on the mountainside.

Should only be a matter of a half day or so now, if all has gone according to plan, that the intrepid group will crest Kili. The moon will be shining full as they look down on the cloud line and feel rightly proud of themselves...awesome.

Gregory da Silva - An Artist Comedian, Storyteller, dancer from Benin West Africa. Gregory da Silva ( Egg Man ) was born in Benin West Africa, Voodoo Country. He speaks French and English and is staying in Cape Town South Africa. Gregory da silva has appeared at many Festivals, Conferences, Congress, World Expo in Africa and is presently staying in Cape Town South Africa. Gregory has appeared at many Festivals in Africa :

Asked about his dreams and ambitions, Gregory (or the "Egg Man" or "Ei man" as he is also known) says that this year he is planning on starting an art school, which is part of his 'Project For Africa' for this year. He wants to impart creative knowledge to South African youth, giving them the power to create beautiful things and also to support themselves, all part of his ultimate venerable ambition to "[bring] Africa together to make one".

We have met the Egg man and hope to meet him again in Cape Town in September and the reason he is on this web site is that he recently promoted the Indaba Festival and the winner of this design festival was:

Dinner Dance at Griffith

Peter Sparks fellow Kilimanjaro 28/8 climber organised this excellent and very successful dance in Griffith:

"The dance was held on Saturday 21-7. Guests were greeted with a glass of Champagne courtesy of McWilliams Wines, nibbles. Sing Australia performed African related songs for approx 30 min while the guests arrived. This really set the tone for the evening and was continued during the meal as Lorraine Sutton moved among the tables singing sultry love songs.

Griffith's acting Mayor was our MC for the night and was in charge of the continuous raffle. The show really got on the road when Linda Pasquette and the Dolly Dance Academy performed a floor show with Linda doing a robust rendition of Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams followed by a short presentation by me talking about the charities and thanking the guests and all those who made the night possible.

Then the dancing got underway music supplied by Rotary Griffith Avanti members Linda and Lorraine with all proceeds from the evening except for the cost of the dinner going to the charities. With 117 guests total it ended up being a fantastic night."

Anna Khuzwayo Climber

Anna Khuzwayo Imizamo Yethu Hout Bay.

Fellow Climber.

We would like to officially welcome Anna to the Kili 28/8 team. Anna will become the face of this project and we are all looking forward to climbing with you Anna. It will be an honour to support you and to learn about your work as an AIDS counsellor in your township of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

Anna Khuzwayo is especially excited about the idea since as an AIDS counsellor already working in IY and Hangberg and based at the Hout Bay day clinic she says, “every foot of the climb will be for people she knows”. Rotary has paid for all the hotel expenses, entry fees and porter fees for the climb but needs help with airfares and equipment for Anna.

Howard Manthe, an experienced hiker has been helping Anna in her training. The big issue at the moment is to kit-out Anna with the special clothing needed for the ascent of Kilimanjaro. Required are the heavy-duty boots that Anna will need and such items as the specialised duffel bag for porters and the moleskin socks to prevent blisters. A specific and special donor is needed for such items and also a sponsor for her airfare to Tanzania. R8,000 (Aussie $ 1,450) is what is required and the donor will actually sponsor Anna herself.
