Subject Depression and Mental Health.

The gathering of over 100 people from Ganmain and area. Ganmain has a population of 560 residents so all in all a great turn out.

The evening was put on by the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.

The night was organised by Rhonda Buchanan and her husband and partner Bryan from the Ganmain Crop Centre.

The event was sponsored by the Ganmain Crop Centre and Incitec Pivot Fertilisers. The Rotary Club of Coolamon was also involved in the organisation.

The subject depression and mental illness. Our Shire and surrounds have gone through and are still suffering from the worst drought in recorded history. Depression is an illness and can be treated and cured. we heard form Noel Trevaskis and how he suffered form depression for many years in and out of hospital, losing his family and his self esteem. Noel was an inspiring speaker and told it like it was. Noel is also a Rotarian.

The Australian Rotary Health Research Fund has raised over $20 million since it was founded 25 years ago. The Fund has contributed over 18 million $ to mental health research in that time.

"In late 2006, my brother-in-law Peter Bell asked if anyone in our circle of family and friends was interested in walking the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea in 2007. His idea was to book the trek for April and celebrate ANZAC Day at the Kokoda Memorial at Isurava. Peter's dad Jim served on the Kokoda Trail in 1942.

After being shot and seriously wounded at Templeton's Crossing high in the Owen Stanley Ranges, Jim despite his wounds and constant pain, managed to walk all the way back along the Trail to Port Moresby. Jim survived the war. It was Peter's intention to walk the same path carrying his dad's dog tags and photo.

Stories about the difficulties of traversing the Kokoda trail were plentiful, as were the names of the many people who had tried and failed. So began a journey of discovery for five old blokes from Wagga Wagga. Our talk is about that journey."

Summary.

Well we can tell you that the food was simply out of this world and no sooner had the food been served it was gone. Such was the quality of the tucker and there was plenty of it. Bobbi and her team from Wagga Wagga did the night proud. Hence the empty plates!

The evening ended with President Grahame thanking one and all. Especially our guests who gave talks on the night, our dancers and singers. Another bulletin will be posted on the speakers later. Marg Perkin was roundly applauded for her magnificent effort in putting this night together: one of the highlights of our Rotary year. Thank you Marg and well done again from all of us.

The results of this evening raised over $1,000 for Dr Alok Sharma's Darkness to Light Project in India.

We formed our relationship in 2005 to celebrate 100 years of Rotary.

ASHLEY KAIMOWITZ UPDATE

"The Nonceba Centre finishing touches are moving well. The management hope that they can move in equipment at the end of March and the centre will open for business on 3rd April. We are looking forward to a number of Rotary International visitors wishing to visit the centre, including the Chairman of the Rotary Foundation later in the year and in March a representative from the E.Club of SWUSA.

Together with PDG Rodney Mazinter an inspection of the security at the centre has been made. We felt there was a need to improve on the preventative security and thus provide suitable safety for Rotary’s investment in the centre. We have approved the upgrade of the boundary fences changing them from wire mesh to a palisade type.

Electrification has already been budgeted for. The cost of this additional protection will be R62000. (Aussie $8,600). A tasteful honours type board will be placed in the reception area which will recognize Rotary and in particular the Rotary Foundation. There under a list of the Rotary Clubs involved headed by our own Club as under the stewardship of PP Matt Mercer at the time we started the Memorial Fund. Making the project a joint one we were joined by the Sea Point, Claremont, Kirstenbosch and Kromboom Clubs.

The involvement of Rotary Clubs in the USA, Fareham Club in England, Japanese Clubs and our special friends at Coolamon in Australia have made the project truly international and recognition must be made to all who have been involved. Not least those members of the public who like Rotarians wanted to honour Ashley and fulfill her dream. The project is indeed an outstanding achievement put simply – ROTARY SHARES ".

We Visit the Nonceba Centre

The Nonceba Centre Update.

Several of the climbers from Kili 28/8 visited the Nonceba center in Khayletisha as guests of Hout Bay Rotary and in particular Rotarian Don Peters. It was Tuesday the 4th September 2007 there we met Nocawe Mankayi, a living angel. We also met a young 7 year old lass who was being counseled. No need for descriptions or photos. She was beautiful, so innocent, so young, so sad.

The road is now spotless! We covered 10 kilometres in 2 hours and collected all sorts of rubbish including a football, barbed wire and lots of empty cans of beer.

At a recent meeting in Orange our District Governor, John Egan, attended a night to promote the formation of a new club, Orange CBD. Guest speaker was John Glassford from Coolamon Rotary and the talk was on RFFA (Rotarians For Fighting AIDS) and raising funds for the orphans of Africa as a result of their parents dying from AIDS. The talk highlighted the Kili 28/8 project see link at the top of this page. During the evening we celebrated Rotary's 103 rd. birthday.

The Coolamon Rotary Club.

Like most Rotary Clubs around the world we endeavour to invite interesting and motivational speakers to our club at least twice a month. This Monday was no exception and our guest speakers were:

Tracey Head and Alan Hesketh from Ariah Park:

Tracey on the left and Alan on the right with Past President Ian Jennings and Marilyn Jennings who introduced Tracey and Alan to the club.

Please note that Ian and Marilyn and their son Tom have just returned from Sri Lanka, when once as a young child Tom Jennings was put up for adoption by his birth mother because of her financial & social situation. To be adopted in Sri Lanka a parent or relative must sign to give their child up. Tom has grown up to be a fine young man with a great future ahead of him in Australia.

"Allen and Tracey have worked as volunteers for International Children’s Aid and spoke about their experience in Sri Lanka running a children’s orphanage on two separate occasions.

All of the money that is donated goes directly to supporting the orphanage and is not absorbed by administrative costs in Australia. Allen is a teacher and Tracey ended up being a nurse again.

The children in the orphanage are genuine orphans or have been sold into what amounts to slavery by their families and have been handed over to the orphanage by the welfare authorities.

At the moment there are twenty-one children in the orphanage. They attend local schools and are being prepared for living independent lives after they grow up.

All the children have sponsors (about one Australian dollar per day) and this covers the costs associated with their care."

Also on the night we had two visiting Rotarians from the Wollundry Rotary Club in Wagga Wagga, Michael Knight and Ric Priest. Michael recited a great Aussie poem as part of his contribution to the evening of fun and fellowship.

A project of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga.

The concept of an Eye Camp in India was a dream of Dr Alok Sharma, an Ophthalmologist and a member of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga. Having joined Rotary in September 2003, Alok put his dream into reality and set about to raise funds to undertake some 200 cataract operations somewhere in India near his home town north of Delhi.

Alok proceeded to make a number of phone calls to India to find a Club that was prepared to assist him in a joint venture. A call to Mr Rajiv Bhatia, the Assistant District Governor of D3080 and Charter President of the Rotary Club of Yamuna Nagar – Riviera that was formed in July 1999, was music to Alok’s ears, as Rajiv was most enthusiastic.

There will be Indian music, a Bollywood Movie and great raffle prizes on the night. Do not miss out on this night of nights in Coolamon Rotary's calender.

We received this wonderful letter of congratulations following the 7 Years Party:

Hi John,

I am working as a Mental Health Nurse doing much work with drought effected persons who are struggling with depression.

Yesterday afternoon we went to the 7 Years long event in Coolamon. What a wonderful afternoon we had. The steak sandwiches were superb. Coolamon Rotary did a wonderful job and each Rotarian looked to be having an enjoyable time.

My husband got some good pics for the local paper and I met up with some of the people who I had been working with. They were appreciating the stress relief the day offered.

Coolamon 7 Years Still Going Strong Party

Part of the large crowd estimated around 3,000 people who supported the evening to show the farmers in the area that people care and that we are all behind them with the drought now 7 years on.

One of the support acts for the main attraction was the band Rusty Shakes with Rotarian and Past President Jock Pearce at the drums.

The main act was Graeme Connors who gave a great performance of his style of country music.

The Lions Bell

The Mystery Continues.

At last night's Rotary meeting the case of the missing Rotary bell and donger continued.

In the place of the dulcet tones of our Rotary bell we had to put up with the insipid tone of the Lions bell and inferior donger.

Seen discussing the mystery are on the left one Lion, Bill and on the right one Rotarian Ed.
Bill is a lawyer and Ed a man of the cloth. Now it came to pass that the culprit, a Lion, is known to us and his deeds will do him nor his club no good. In fact the punishment for a Lion removing Rotary regalia is to be made mane less, or man less, or both, not a good look for a lion. The only lions who are mane less come from Tsavo East game park in Kenya. The famed man eaters of Tsavo:

Two of the descendants of the man eaters of Tsavo take a breather during their amorous trysts.

Would the culprit Lion please note that the mane less look is not a good one for a lion and neither is the man less one. Therefore we suggest that the Rotary bell and donger be returned forthwith, polished and in good condition.

Vocational Service Night 26 November

Vocational Services Director Ray Foley with the two recipients of the Rotary Pride in Workmanship Award.

On the left of Ray is Sharon Reardon and on Ray's right is Karen Leary.

Sharon Reardon has been a school teacher since 1985. At present she is Principal
of Matong Public School and will be Principal of Temora Public School from the New Year.

Karen Leary has worked at Commins Hendriks since 1982. In accepting her award she commented that when she began working it was for the very organised Jim Thompson but she has now inherited Bill. Her colleagues understood her perfectly.

The plaque awarded to Sharon Reardon.

Ray presenting the Rotary Small Business Award to Lee Inch for her wonderful restaurant/coffee shop in a tin shed, called "Ajanta" in Coolamon. Lee has converted what can only be described as a tin shed into a veritable “Aladdin’s Cave” of great food, coffee and surprises.

The guest speaker for the night was Gary Brown fromWagga Wagga who spoke on the employment of Chinese nationals in Wagga to help ease the skills shortage in Australia. Gary commented on the incredible shortage of skilled
workers in Australia at the moment and of the use of 457 Work Visas to bring staff from overseas for periods of from 3 months to 4 years. He commented on the numbers of apprentices who qualify and then leave their jobs to travel. He remains impressed with the commitment of the Chinese workers who have come to the district. They seem to be settling in and becoming part of the local scene.

We "flew" the South African Flag at last Monday's meeting in honour of the Springboks world cup triumph and toasted our twin club Hout Bay Rotary.

Coolamon Bingo Night Friday 19th October

Below is some of the action from our popular bingo nights held every month in Coolamon. Funds raised go to the Coolamon and District Hospital.

The caller Rotarian Annette Green and her assistant Curtis Armstrong, Curtis is on community service for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Open Garden Day October Kiambo

Sue and Max Chapman conducted an open garden weekend to raise funds for the New South Wales Cancer Council and Rotary's Shelter Box project.

The garden built and maintained by Sue and Max is one of the finest examples of any garden anywhere. This generous contribution of their time and hard work was supported by the Rotary Club of Coolamon. The funds raised over the weekend reached $4,000.
